India's tourism industry has experienced a remarkable comeback in 2024, as international visitors to the country have reached 20.5 million, an increase of 14.85% compared to pre-pandemic numbers. With the country as a whole rebounding, Gujarat is now the third most popular destination in India as for foreigners. According to statistics released by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture; Gujarat ranks next in popularity behind Maharashtra and West Bengal, which indicates an increase in interest from international tourist markets, reflected in the rising overseas tourist arrivals in Gujarat.
Improvements in infrastructure development in the state combined with aiming on developing destination potential and successful delivery mechanisms linked to all central tourism-related schemes, have collectively contributed to a steady growth in international visitor footfall in Gujarat, strengthening the state’s position in the global travel directory.
The growth of tourism in Gujarat has benefitted from a variety of central government programs, including Swadesh Darshan 2.0; the Challenge-Based Destination Development Program; and Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment. These programs are being utilized in conjunction with the state's own support for, and promotion of, spiritual tourism, eco-tourism, heritage conservation and modern attractions.
